Frequently Asked Questions

There are a few common questions that people often ask, or difficulties new users may experience. We've tried to answer some of them for you here, in an easy reference list.

How do I acquire software?

Submit the Request Software form if you are a faculty member or view the guidelines if you are a student. You will be instructed as to how to proceed.

Can I install my software on two computers at once?

No, you are limited to one installation only. If you have more than one computer (i.e. home computer and laptop or work computer), you will need to choose on which one you'd like the use the software. Keep in mind as well that friends, family, and colleagues who are not enrolled in a course in a department that subscribes to the MSDNAA program are not permitted to access or use the software.

Do I have to agree to the EULA (End-User License Agreement)?

By installing, copying, or otherwise using the Product, you agree to be bound by the terms of the EULA and the Amendment to the EULA. If you do not agree to be bound, do not install, copy, or use the product.

Are there any limitations to my use of the software?

You may use the software for non-commercial purposes including instructional use, research and/or design, and development and testing of projects for class assignments, tests, or personal projects. You may not use the program software for any for-profit software development.

What happens if I am no longer in the School of Business?

When you are no longer a registered student in a department that is a member of the MSDN Academic Alliance, you may no longer receive updates for your personal use computer. However, you may continue to use previously installed products on your computer, provided you continue to follow program guidelines.

Are products included in MSDN the full retail version?

Products included in MSDN are the full, retail versions unless otherwise noted. Developer Editions are usually identical to the retail version, however some Developer Editions have limited functionality.

Can I download operating systems for Windows Mobile devices?

No. Please see your device manufacturer or service provider for operating system installation and upgrade information.

Where can I find information on common technical issues?

Microsoft Help and Support Services maintains a vast Knowledge Base of articles on common questions and issues with Microsoft products. We encourage you to do a quick search of the Knowledge Base by keyword before seeking technical support. Often, you will find that other people have experienced similar issues or have had roughly the same question.

Where can I obtain information on known security issues?

Microsoft is committed to doing everything possible to make certain that every customer can work, communicate, and do business securely over the Internet. The Microsoft Security Web site provides the latest information on known security issues and how to properly secure your systems. Patches, checklists, and much more are available at the Microsoft Security website.

What software is available?

The following Microsoft software is included in this agreement: Access 2007, Accounting Professional 2007, OneNote 2007, Project 2007, SQL Server 2000 Personal Edition, SQL Server 2005, Visual Studio Professional Edition 2005, Visio 2007, and Windows XP Professional. Please note that Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) is not available through the MSDNAA.

Why aren't there any CDs when I attempt to check one out?

Although we will do our best to accommodate your needs, we cannot guarantee a disk will be available for you. Software is made available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Our agreement allows us to create 50 copies of the software to be checked out on a temporary basis and install on personal use computers. For all software reproduced for checkout, it will be a complete copy, including all copyright and trademark notices. Please note that all available software is installed on every machine in the 6th floor Rockwell Hall labs.
