Congratulations
2006 Phi Beta Lambda State Conference Winners |
Several of our Duquesne Business School students attended the PA Phi Beta Lambda Pennsylvania State Conference the weekend of April 22-23, 2006, and participated in various competitive events. We are thrilled to report that five of our students placed in this statewide competition!
Phi Beta Lambda is the college program of FBLA—Future Business Leaders of America, a very successful program offered in numerous high schools around the country.
Our Duquesne Phi Beta Lambda chapter is new this year—we have 12 members, and eight of the chapter members agreed to participate in the state conference.
The following Duquesne students placed in their various competitive events:
- John Olszewski, Senior
FIRST PLACE—Accounting for Professionals and Financial Analysis and Decision Making
- Bill Cloonan, Freshman
FIRST PLACE—Information Management and THIRD PLACE—Financial Concepts
- Allison Petras, Junior
FIRST PLACE—Marketing Concepts
- Elizabeth Archer, Junior
THIRD PLACE—International Business
- Carla Brown, Junior
THIRD PLACE—Impromptu Speaking and Public Speaking
The events listed above (with the exception of the speaking events) required the students to take a timed, one-hour, 100-question multiple choice exam in their subject area. The speaking events included a five minute presentation based on a topic given to the participant with three minutes to prepare, and the delivery of a prepared presentation.
We are especially pleased with the performance of our students, considering that the competition included some of the following schools: IUP, Drexel, Temple, Bloomsburg, and Shippensburg. In total, 205 students from 20 colleges and universities participated in the conference. The conference also included various workshops that the students attended, which this year consisted of motivational speakers on career planning, teamwork, etc. Additionally, the students are required to attend all of the events in professional attire (yes folks, that's suits, dresses, etc.!) for the entire event.
Lastly, our first place winners (John Olszewski, Bill Cloonan, and Allison Petras) will now move on to compete in the National competition, which will be held in Nashville in June 2006. Approximately 3,000 students from around the country will attend the national competition.
Please join us in congratulating our winners! |
