BSBA in Investment Management

About Our Major

Graduates of the Investment Management program at Duquesne University are well-prepared to enter the challenging and rewarding field of investment management. The program’s curriculum is based on the Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA®) Body of Knowledge, which insures that our graduates are ready to sit for the Level One CFA® exam at the end of their senior year.

The Investment Management program also includes portfolio management experience, opportunities to master the latest investment technology and interaction with members of the professional investment community. The Investment Management program at Duquesne provides an excellent starting point for launching a satisfying career.

Challenging, Relevant Curriculum

Our curriculum is based upon materials offered by the CFA Institute® and covers the topics prescribed by the CFA Candidate Body of Knowledge®. Duquesne University is among a small, distinguished group of universities worldwide with a curriculum that offers this level of preparation for the Chartered Financial Analyst® certification.

Money Management Experience

In their senior year, students have the opportunity to manage a portfolio of securities collaboratively that has been entrusted to the Investment Management program by alumni and friends of Duquesne University. Students follow defined investment objectives, investment processes and operational practices. They use industry and corporate analyses to determine the composition of the portfolio, and student research generated by the experience can be published and made available for outside review. Managing an actual investment portfolio significantly enhances our students’ professional skills.

Exposure to Technology

Duquesne University operates a state-of-the-art Investment Center, which uses a technology platform shared by most major investment firms in the United States. In the Center, students work with powerful investment databases and analytical tools, including Bloomberg®, Compustat®, Ibbotson®, Morningstar® and Reuters® technology. In addition, they complete a variety of research projects that are designed to lead to proficiency, and in some cases to certification, in the use of these important analytical tools.

Interaction with the Investment Community

The quality and success of the Investment Management program depends on providing students with a broad range of experiences in the professional investment community, and this close working relationship with investment firms often results in career opportunities for successful graduates. However, our academic-professional partnerships provide their greatest value before graduation. They allow students to visit practicing investment firms, tour securities exchanges and collaborate with established investment professionals.

Students also work on research and analytical projects, meet regulatory professionals, participate in speaker series and investment conferences, and possibly earn recognition through one of several investment firm-sponsored student award programs.

A Distinctive Program in Investment Management

Graduates of the Investment Management program are well-prepared professionals. The technologies our students employ are the same analytical platforms used by practicing professionals. Most important, we make sure that our students gain significant, creditial building experience beyond the classroom. And because the program provides a valuable education inside and outside the classroom, our graduates are better prepared to make the transition from the university to a professional investment management career. Evidence of the quality of our program is the success of our graduates, who hold a wide variety of professional positions throughout the investment community.
