BSBA in Investment Management

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the principal features of the Investment Management program at Duquesne University?

Duquesne University offers a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, with a concentration in Investment Management. This program prepares students for successful careers as investment professionals through a curriculum based on the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®) Body of Knowledge. The curriculum is supplemented by a number of outside-the-classroom experiences and culminates in a capstone experience in hands-on funds management where students, using the resources of the Duquesne University Investment Center and working with faculty, advisors and investors, manage a portfolio of funds entrusted to the participants in this program.

How does the Funds Management program operate?

Qualified students enroll in a two-course sequence in their senior year at Duquesne. Working in teams under the guidance of investment professionals and A.J. Palumbo School of Business faculty, students select common stock investments from small- and mid-cap segments of the US equity markets. Fund managers seek to achieve superior longterm performance by investing in common stocks of growing, financially sound companies at discounts to intrinsic value. Students conduct research in security analysis and portfolio management with the goal of outperforming the benchmark Russell 2000® stock index.

What are the key features of the Fund Management experience?

• Conducting in-depth analyses of individual companies resulting in investment recommendations and published research reports. Analyses follow the security evaluation process incorporated in the CFA Body of Knowledge®.

• Decision making on the purchase and sale of common stocks in a real investment setting with funds from outside investors.

• Presenting investment recommendations, research reports and fund performance to fund investors, advisory board members and investment professionals.

• Participating in investment competitions and other events sponsored by organizations such as the CFA Society of Pittsburgh.

What other experiences does the Investment Management curriculum provide?

Students participate in a number of activities and events outside the classroom to expand their overall professional knowledge. The Investment Management Association exposes members to research and publishing in industry analysis. The organization also recruits and hosts guest speakers, and permits student members to attend analyst and shareholder meetings as well as professional conferences.

The Duquesne Investment Center develops student proficiency with the latest in investment research tools. Students may earn Equity and Fixed Income certification on the Bloomberg™ platform. The University also offers students the opportunity to attend investment conferences and participate in volunteer opportunities that expose them to various aspects of the investment community.

How many students are enrolled in the Investment Management program?

Duquesne University typically graduates approximately 25 Investment Management students each academic year. Enrollment is not formally restricted, but the program is rigorous and performance is judged by a high set of standards.

What are the faculty credentials in the Investment Management program?

The Investment Management faculty is a group of highly qualified professionals who have achieved academic, publishing and practitioner experience in investment management. Our eight faculty members have expertise in equities, fixed income, options and futures, and alternative investments. Research interests include market structure, trading performance and socially responsible investing. Faculty members are also active in professional associations including the C.F.A.® Society of Pittsburgh.

What career opportunities are available to graduating students?

Career placement is an important element of the Investment Management program. Students are encouraged to pursue intern positions while enrolled in the program, and many of these experiences have led to career opportunities. Positions are available with investment advisory, mutual fund, commercial banking, insurance and private equity firms as well as regulatory agencies. Duquesne alumni hold positions in all of these industries, and many graduates support current students as mentors and sponsors during internship assignments and career placement.
