Certification and Licensure

Certification is highly recommended in accounting. A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation is sponsored by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Candidates for CPA certification must possess a bachelor's degree or its equivalent from an accredited college-level institution.

Candidates interested in the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) certification must be of good moral character, be employed or expect to be employed in the management accounting area, and hold a bachelor's degree or its equivalent form an accredited college-level institution. Most importantly, the applicant must already be a certified public accountant.

Many certifications exist for those entering the accounting and/or accounting information systems profession. The most widely recognized certifications and licensure include:

 
Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
  The AICPA has resources available to students and CPA candidates to guide you in the right direction as you prepare for a career as a CPA.
 
Certified Management Accountant (CMA)
  The Institute of Management Accountants is dedicated to re-balancing the accountancy profession by educating society regarding the business building role of management accountants and finance professionals working inside organizations.
 
Certified Internal Auditor (CIA)
  Candidates for CIA certification must possess a bachelor's degree or its equivalent from an accredited college-level institution. Candidates must have 24 months of internal auditing (or equivalent) experience.
 
Certified Bank Auditor (CBA)
  This certification is recognized throughout the financial services industry as the only certification program that thoroughly tests candidates in four distinct bank-specific areas: Accounting, Auditing Principles and Bank Laws/Regulations, Auditing Practices, and General Business.
