If there is
a question that we didn't address, feel free
to contact any of the ISM
Faculty.
Will I have
to sit in front of a computer all day and write
programs?
A common misperception is that ISM professionals
spend the majority of their time working on computers
and handling tasks like programming. In reality,
most ISM professionals have dynamic careers as
managers who are responsible for understanding
the latest developments in technology and overseeing
the efficient implementation of technology resources.
Unlike a typical ISM career path, individuals
with Computer Science degrees usually handle
computer-intensive tasks such as programming
and software engineering.
How do I learn more
about majoring or double majoring in ISM?
Any
of the faculty members within the ISM department
are more than happy to discuss the major and
career opportunities.
Why do I
have to take a programming class?
You have been
trained since grade school to solve problems,
beginning with addition and subtraction, then
moving to multiplication and division. You might
start by counting on your fingers, then learn
to become a "human calculator" by memorizing
multiplication tables. These are skills you use
every day to solve simple problems, such as figuring
out a waitress's tip. These problems result from
the need to make a decision.
The complexity of
decision making in today's business world often
requires that a great deal of time be spent considering
the available options and what their potential
outcomes will be. And, although an ISM professional
do NOT spend the majority of their time handling
tasks like programming, they still need to be
able to solve problems and make decisions. A
programming course will help develop these skills.
And, lastly, don't be scared. It will be similar
to taking a math class.
What does someone in a systems/business analyst
position do?
This is
the most needed position facing corporate America
today. These people are the bridge between
the extremely technical people and the business
people, and because of this, they have a well-rounded
background in both technology and business.
To find out more about the technology field,
contact any of the faculty members.
What is information systems
management?

a simple
structure,
meetings
begin
with an
update
on DAIT
and activities
carried
out within
the committees.
Following
the update,
an industry
professional
presents
on a selected
topic
of interest
to ISM
students.
When the
speaker
has finished
presenting,
a few
conclusionary
statements
are made
and the
meeting
is concluded. For more information, send
an email to DAIT@duq.edu. |
