When hiring companies grumble about lacking skillsets or a business disaster seizes headlines, business schools are able to respond quickly with classroom tweaks or new programs altogether.
In the 1980s, there were complaints graduates were not as analytical, leading schools to pour on the spreadsheets, statistics and quantitative analysis, said Alan Miciak, dean of Duquesne University's undergraduate and graduate business schools. The last decade has ushered in calls for ethics and character in curricula.
"If you're listening and looking to the market, signals have been coming," Miciak said.
He said Duquesne listened and found that sustainability, a broad term encompassing environmental stewardship and corporate social responsibility, was hot on the minds of corporations.
Business School Dean Appointed to New Term
"I am grateful to the president and the provost for their continued support during my first term as dean," said Miciak, who was named one of the "100 Most Influential People in Finance" in 2008 by Treasury & Risk Magazine."
Significant Recognition Achieved Under Miciak
"Dean Alan R. Miciak has moved the school forward in all areas by emphasizing scholarship, promoting excellence and applying the University's Spiritan and Catholic values to business education," said Dr. Charles Dougherty, Duquesne University president.
